Review of The Insider (1999) by Daniel R — 26 Sep 2011
The subject matter of this film - corporate cover ups in the tobacco industry - does not automatically lend itself to slick high-paced thriller territory. However, Michael Mann, with his 'nuts and bolts' unpretentious yet pacey style, delivers a treat.
He is helped in his endevours by some very good performances, in particuar those of on-form Al Pacino and the always good Christopher Plummer. Russell Crowe is also solid, but never reaches the heights or intensity of his performance in LA Confidential.
After watching the film, I noticed that two and a half hours had passed. Generally films of this length sag in places, but every minute of screen time here seemed necessary.
