Review of The Insider (1999) by Cory B — 22 Aug 2008
Not for everybody. If you like a lot of dialogue, no action, and a classic Al Pacino rant (which happens to be the cornerstone of this film), it's for you. Most people would be bored to tears by this.
I mean this guy (Mann) made Heat, and there's not even a gunshot in this. Pacino and Crowe give it there all, but the standout here is Chris Plummer, who does pulls off spit-and-image of 60 Minutes' Mike Wallace.
If you know anything about the plot then you're thinking 'yeah, cigs kill,' but we didn't always know that, and it's a big secret being revealed in the film. I'll wrap it up by saying this was Oscar bait for sure, but it does tell a compelling story made up of some beautiful shots, classic lines, and, c'mon it's Michael Mann.
