Review of The Innkeepers (2011) by Toby L — 14 May 2012
It's simple premise, and not a lot happens, but it kept my interest the whole time and maintained some very solid tension. There were some decent scares too. I gave an extra half-to-whole star for the direction.
I'm a big Ti West fan so far as there aren't a lot of directors, especially in this genre, who put so much thought into each and every shot. I don't mind that he is obvious with his influences and the homages in his films, as shown by The Innkeepers and The House of the Devil.
Both movies are very cool looking and do a great job of setting a mood. With that being said though, I would like to see him take on projects with a little more substance and/or larger scale; as well as he has done so far, I'd hate to see his style/films to get stale or his potential unseen.
