Review of The Informer (1935) by Vincent D — 28 Sep 2013
I feel that perhaps to have enjoyed this movie you had to be more familiar with Irish history than I am...perhaps not. Set during the early 1900's after World War I during the Irish Revolution, Gypo Nolan (Victor McLaglen) sells out a fugitive comrade and fellow countryman for his bounty.
As the saying goes, snitches get stitches. The remainder of the movie is based on Gypo trying to cover up deed he did, ruing his actions, and repenting for his wrong. The film was highly acclaimed fin it's time winning Oscars for best director and best musical score.
The music did not seem so spectacular to me, but perhaps for it's time it was exceptional. The screenplay also took an Oscar, and McLaglen took the award for best actor. It's not a fast paced movie, and I had a hard time deciding whether I liked it or not.
There was a lot of long dialogue, often drunken. I almost gave the movie 2 stars, but after reflecting on the meaning of the movie to write the review I figured I can at least say I liked the movie. This is a good movie for anyone who like classic pictures.
