Review of The Incredibles (2004) by Harry W — 11 Oct 2013
The Incredible is one of the single greatest animated films in existence and is an unforgettable piece of my childhood. The elements of it have not decreased in the more than 15 times that I've watched it in my life. Essentially it can be summarised by reading the title.
First, it contains one of the coolest movie plots ever since it appeals to both kids and adults. It appeals to adults through its intelligent satire of superhero themes and family values through a colourful look at its characters, while it connects to the younger viewers in the manner that it chronicles a family of superheroes of various ages and genders through which the young viewers can connect to. The amount of fun is immense and unforgettable, and getting sucked into the plot is practically impossible not to do. The Incredibles stood out for me because I was always one of those kids that wanted superpowers, and so seing Dashiell "Dash" Parr taking advantage of his super speed was all too amazing to watch. And looking back on it now I have a significantly greater appreciation for the satirical elements of the film, as well as messages about trust, appreciation and equality which are all conveyed cleverly and well. The humour is just grand and its impossible not to be constantly laughing at The Incredibles due to the fine script.
And the iconic characters are all matched with impeccable voice acting from Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Spencer Fox, Sarah Voewll, Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Bird, Jason Lee, Wallace Shawn and as always, John Ratzenberger.
My Favourite character will always be Dash because of his hilarious speed and cocky attitude, but this time around I found myself constantly laughing at Helen Parr/Elastigirl because of how she's the independent female superhero in a super-male dominated society that won't let it get to her, and she ties the family together comedically as the mother. The Incredibles is full of unforgettable characters.
Basically, the adventurous fun of The Incredibles is packed with incredible action along the way which is very cleverly crafted and awesome looking, and as with every Pixar film, groundbreaking animation. The animation is at some of its finest in The Incredibles, as it is aesthetically pleasing in colour and texture, and its just unforgettable imagery, and is matched with an excellent musical score to add the cherry on top.
So The Incredibles is an amazing action film, animated film, superhero film, satire and much much more which deserves a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director for Brad Bird's amazing efforts on The Incredibles, which is as the title predicts, Incredible.
