Review of The Incredibles (2004) by Cj W — 08 Aug 2014
The Incredibles is in my opinion, one of the greatest animated films of all time. The film is so much more complex than what it seems on the surface, it is a superhero tale, that is also a sleek spy thriller, wrapped in a satire of the normalcy of suburban life.
The screenplay is just masterfully written by writer/director Brad Bird, he uses the superhero element only to entice kids and to convey his main theme, which is that being super or unique in this day and age is just having the ability to be selfless.
Bird portrays our society as selfish, greedy assholes who isolate themselves from the rest of the world, and are unable to conjure any altruistic sentiments. But besides the thematic elements, the dialogue is also very witty, as in all Pixar films, has very sharp comedy, and genuine drama.
The animation though, may not be the best Pixar has ever put out there, but it remains loyal to its cartoony nature, and the action sequences and scenes on the island are all very stunning. The Incredibles is definitely up there with Wall-E and Up as the greatest Pixar films ever, and also, is one of the greatest animated films of all time.
It has an outstanding story that will entertain children and adults, visuals that are mesmerizing, and a script that is so complex and insightful that many adults will not understand it fully.
