Review of The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) by Nadene R — 21 Jun 2008
Rating this film is really difficult because you have to balance its value at the time it was made with its value for an audience today.
For the past... outstanding effects. (We owe this film a lot!) Truly original and brave. And I'm sure the banter between husband and wife was also quite ground-breaking.
My main issue with the story is that I found little relief from the downward spiral of the lead character and dare I say it ... he bored me. But I'm sure, if I had viewed this film in 1957, I would have been riveted by the spectacle and more importantly moved by his interior monologues.
Today, I need more light and shade to be drawn in. Think - "Cast Away". Drama, romance, humour.
So do I think "The Incredible Shrinking Man" (1957) is a good film?
Yes! An important film. A clever film. With so much to teach a student of film. And a lovely epiphany at the end. Just watch it with the past in mind. (To be fair.).
