Review of The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) by Kevin S — 06 Oct 2008
One of the best science fiction dramas to come out of the 1950's. Yes, it exploited the fear of nuclear radiation, as did many films of the early cold war era, but it also made good use of other phobias that men commonly have: Will the cleaners give me the wrong pair of pants? Are certain parts of my body smaller than those of other men? Will I be eaten by my wife's cat? etc. etc. etc.
I've seen this film many times and I never tire of it. Not only are the special effects exceptional, but so are the performances. To say that The Incredible Shrinking Man is good science fiction is unnecessarily limiting, you don't have to be a sci-fi fan to like this one.
