Review of The Incredible Hulk (2008) by Nick K — 22 Apr 2014
A good film, almost a great film.
The movie starts off so well, as Banner struggles incognito in a south american setting, searching for rare plants to use in a potential cure. His first hulk out in the dark factory is rather tense and scary!
The homage scenes to the 1970s/80s TV show were awesome.
The film starts to weaken, when certain military men are seen as power hungry tyrants... an unfortunate stereotype. Yet General Ross is given some more depth later in the film.
The Hulk battle with the military is also well executed, with the exception of a silly "sonic weapon." Betty Ross and Banner have a good romantic tension and dynamic.
Unfortunately, the film weakens just where it should shine... at the climax. When Banner jumps from the helicopter... this marks the start of the problem. A good Hulk versus Abomination battle was needed, and almost happened... but the rooftop battle was disappointing. The two monsters wrestle around awkwardly. When the camera comes close to their faces, the CGI falls apart... and they look horribly cartoonish. The only good thing I can say about the climax, was the menacing roar Hulk gives out after his victory... and the stunned people watching with fear. That was a good scene, but not good enough to erase the unreal prior battle.
