Review of The Incredible Hulk (2008) by Anthony K — 15 Jan 2016
It's uneven for sure, but this is still one of the stronger pre-Disney Marvel Cinematic Universe films. more than Ang Lee's tragic 2003 misstep, this film captures the philosophical underpinnings of Bruce Banner's out of control id without compromising the smash-em-up excitement that keeps it moving forward. The Incredible Hulk also doesn't get enough credit for featuring one of the most engaging villains to grace the Marvel canon before Loki. Tim Roth's performance as Emil Blonsky (the Abomination) is both restrained and compelling, showing his slow spiral into madness brilliantly.
That said, this film often struggles to find an even balance between drama, action and (weirdly placed) screwball humor. Anyone who isn't Banner or Blonsky also gets the short end of the stick as far as character depth. And I hate to be that spoiled critic of the 2010's, but the special effects are starting to show their age.
A fun film for sure and thankfully runs on a smaller scale than the universe-endangering films that Marvel gives us semi-annually. 6.4/10.
