Review of The Incredible Hulk (2008) by Gavin C — 25 Jun 2013
I may not be a fan of the Hulk comics, but seeing this film got me completely awed with amazement and shock. Ok, it's not excellent and it's apparently flawed in some ways, but this is an entertaining action movie.
The story is engaging and has a heart in the right place with a solid mind-controlling idea which works. It also has strong character development along with a decent relationship between Bruce Banner and Betty Ross. The script is refreshing and the humor is really good; the direction from Louis Leterrier (the guy who would later direct the critically panned "Clash of the Titans" remake) is terrific and the cinematography along with the scenery are solid in their own right. The music from Craig Armstrong is excellent, but the strongest part would have to go to the cast of actors.
Edward Norton is a great Bruce Banner, Liv Tyler is a decent Betty Ross, William Hurt is a menacing General Ross, Tim Blake Nelson is an enjoyable Dr. Samuel Sterns, and Tim Roth is a sinister Blonsky and the terrifying Abomination. The CGI effects are terrific especially the Hulk and the Abomination.
The only problems I do have is that it is a little long and the final battle between the hulk and the abomination came across as a little anti-climatic, but overall, The Incredible Hulk is an engaging action film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While we have yet to see a sequel get made somewhere in the future, I would like to see what Mark Ruffalo from The Avengers pull off his role in that film.
