Review of The Incredible Hulk (1977) by Jake N — 18 Dec 2014
I could barely remember anything about my initial viewing of this-other than thinking it was better than Ang Lee's Hulk, but still not very good. It's actually better than I recall, although it still comes off silly as shit.
It's not Edward Norton's fault either, or even the almost always annoying Liv Tyler. This was made in the early stages of the MCU, and the CGI simply doesn't hold up. Whenever Hulk is onscreen it looks like a video game.
And the inconsistency of switching the character to Mark Ruffalo, albeit a welcome addition to The Avengers, will always bother me. I can see why Marvel is still hesitating to do another Hulk movie to this day.
It's just very difficult to pull off a story that feels grounded in reality, rather than over-the-top and "comic-bookish." Still, the quality Marvel has achieved since then and Ruffalo's embodiment of the character would give a new Hulk movie much better odds.
For now, we'll have to settle for next Summer's Avengers: Age of Ultron for Hulk-busting action. That's going to rule.
