Review of The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013) by Christopher C — 15 Jul 2013
I think the problem with a number of the negative reviews by "young" critics is that they just don't get it. This film is a laugh-riot. Think of it as a camped out, Vegas-version of "the Prestige" re-vamped for a 1980's 1990's sensibility and you can't help but laugh till you cry.
I was particularly impressed by Olivia Wilde's take on the dumb-blonde showgirl bit when she was thrust on the stage for the first time. Jim Carrey's over the top performance as a Criss-Angel trickster was bang on the money.
Some key ideas about classical real magic versus mind-gross out are explored here and handled quite nicely. This is not meant to be "deep", rather, just a fun-off. It may gather a cult following in time.
The winter-spring release date may have offset its reception. This is a summer flick, meant to be enjoyed with a nice brew. I think it's a winner, if you actually "get the point".
