Review of The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013) by Clif K — 10 Feb 2014
This film seems to be marketed as a comedy with Steve Carrell and Jim Carrey as two of the main leads, but sadly, this movie is actually more sad than funny. Carell's character, Burt Wonderstone, comes off as a rude, pretentious, and misogynistic man, who's career as a Las Vegas magician is suddenly stripped away from him, but due to this cocky and sometimes annoying attitude, the viewer winds up being glad that he's hit rock bottom, which causes the viewer to lose interest in his revival.
This film even manages to make Jim Carrey seem like a prick, which ultimately makes his supposedly humorous stunts into agitating, villainous acts. It's as if the director were trying to make the viewer laugh at a bully pulling out the feathers of an already crippled dove.
Even though this movie will most likely fail to squeeze even a chuckle out of the viewer, the tattered friendship between Carell and Steve Buscemi's character, Anton Marvelton, just might rekindle some of those past memories of long lost friendships.
Does this make The Incredible Burt Wonderston a bad film? No, but just don't expect to burst into laughter with a group of your friends while you're gathered around a pizza at one in the morning.
This film just may kill the mood.
