Review of The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013) by Mloy X — 21 May 2014
Jane (Olivia Wilde): [after Gray burned his skin for a trick] That is a terrible trick to do for.
Children. What if they try and copy you?
Steve Gray (Jim Carrey): I sue them. It's my trick.
This was cute but nothing special and unfortunately really short on real "laugh-out-loud" moments. A darn shame really because I remembered a time when Jim Carrey was actually funny. I liked that the film tried a different approach to Steve Carrell's character, normally plays the loveable loser but this time he was the ego-centric jerk with a heart of gold. The film's biggest ace was Steve Buscemi, he's incredibly funny-- remember him as Mr. Pink in "Reservoir Dogs", he was friggin' hilarious! But he was so under-utilized in this film, he practically disappeared mid-way through the film only to reappear in the 3third act. What a waste of talent The story was okay, the magic was kind of cool but boring. There really wasn't enough pizzazz; something like the tricks in the "Now You See Me" film would have been awesome. The David Copperfield cameo was great but that alone was not enough to carry the whole movie. So overall, the film was okay to watch once but a real-ho-hum kind of a film and sadly, nothing to get too excited about.
