Review of The Impossible (2012) by Jake N — 27 Aug 2013
Not for the faint of heart. This film is excruciating and arduous to watch. The devastation caused by the 2004 tsunami is captured brilliantly and brutally. The separation and struggle of one particular family in the aftermath is the focus, and it doesn't waste much time getting to some truly horrific imagery and heartbreaking performances.
I can't believe how little attention this got during Oscar season. As much as I loved Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook, Naomi Watts deserved the win for Best Actress. Ewan McGregor and all three children are also very impressive.
It's odd that this felt more like a real life end of the world movie than most of the post-apocalyptic movies that have come out recently. A natural disaster like this can be the most frightening scenario of them all, because it's an unavoidable reality.
And this shit really happened.
