Review of The Impossible (2012) by Mary O — 21 Mar 2014
I think I cried from start to finish. Wow. This is one of the most prolific films I have watched in a very long time. And while I may be about 2 years behind on the "Oscar buzz" around it, I cannot seem to fathom why this film wasn't given more attention and praise for it's brilliant story and brilliant direction.
Naomi Watts shines, as does the young actor that plays her son, Tom Holland. I look forward to following his promising career. Most of the critical reviews I can find on it seem to critique the film for "white washing" it's characters and only focusing on a wealthy white family instead of the tsunami's effect on Thailand as a whole.
However I don't think that is the purpose that the film serves at all. While it presents a moving picture about the nightmare of natural disaster, it's really about the unbreakable bond between parents and their children.
