Review of The Importance of Being Earnest (2002) by Andy S — 20 May 2008
No, sadly, this film does not work. The music is great (perhaps the best part of the film) and I think Judi Dench plays her character to perfection, but I just couldn't believe the love between any of the characters (except perhaps Tom Wilkinson and Anna Massey).
Granted, perhaps I'm too familiar (or comfortable) with the better Jane Austen films as of late. Still, I think this film could have been better and for a classic example for a film of a similar vein that really works (and also stars Rupert Everett), see "An Ideal Husband".
