Review of The Importance of Being Earnest (2002) by Sophie . — 15 Dec 2008
*Spoilers*.
Obviously meant to be light hearted and unrealistic, it ended stupid and not funny in the slightest, just a bit mixed up and mad. Ernest is an attractive name, I guess, as it is a quality some look for in a person. It helps that Colin firth?s character has this name, because he basically acts this way in all his movies. So he is John in the country and Earnest in the City, for no reason. This is the only mishap in the whole movie and the only secret. That and the fact that the gay guy from ?My Best Friends Wedding? pretends to be Earnest/Johns brother. For no reason. So ?John? gets caught when his lover from the city comes to the country and his ?brother? shows up and falls for a randomly overly innocent 18 year old. Who is played by Reese and I was disappointed that it was so overacted and unrealistic and stupid.
So then there is the drama of the names not being real, but then we find out that in-fact they are brothers and Earnests real names John but he lies and wants to be Earnest. I was just happy at this point because the lover of John/Earnest tattooed his name on her ass and that would be rather embarrassing for her if he stayed with John. So in the end the fact that they lied for no reason didn?t matter and that love got them through everything?though there wasn?t anything in the way of their perfect love.
It got a bit old fast and I didn?t see the point. Gay guy should stay with the gay roles its obvious he?s not straight so it doesn?t come across natural cause its not.
