Review of The Immigrant (2013) by Aaron C — 29 Sep 2014
The Immigrant is a finely observed, beautifully crafted film about the old world. Set in 1920s New York it chronicles the trials of Ewa, superbly played by Cotillard, a new arrival from Poland. Her sister is detained at Ellis Island, but she is taken up by Bruno a man that has a soon to seen to dark side.
James Gray is a classic director who frames his shots with care and lets his actors do the work. This story is part history lesson and part love triangle. Joaquin Phoenix shines as the devious Bruno. A classic film in so many ways.
