Review of The Immigrant (2013) by Craig F — 01 Jan 2015
The story is very simple, without intricacies or complications. But I think that along with La Vie en Rose, this is Marion Cotillard's best performance. The photography and production design are simply wonderful.
Cinematographer Darius Khondji's work is marvellous, using a warm palette that is present all the time and that gives the movie an authentic look from the 1920s (very The Godfather 2 style). I loved almost every shot of this movie, but my favourite was the last one: with the small boat leaving the shore of Ellis Island on one side, and Joaquin Phoenix crossing the frame door on the other.
