Review of The Immigrant (2013) by Ching T — 19 Jan 2015
I wanted to love this because I love Cotillard, Joaquin and period pieces, but this one was quite dark. The fact Cotillard's ingenue character would be hopelessly taken advantage of was quite predictable, I just didn't care what happened because of the lack of chemistry between the three protagonists.
Cotillard, as usual, acted the hell out of this with her eyes, facial expressions and body postures and surprised me with her seemingly fluent Polish in some of the scenes. Overall, I much preferred her performance in 2 Days, One Night, which apparently the Academy does too.
