Review of The Imitation Game (2014) by Srikanth V — 30 Apr 2015
While the film is thoroughly enjoyable on just the premise and the level of the acting, which more than propped up a sterile film rewrite (one that had a great opportunity to rise beyond the clichés of portraying a misunderstood genius' life), it fails to get viewers to connect with the characters.
The whole staging, somehow, distanced me from Turing's character, and I was also a little disappointed with the choice of Cumberbatch (a brilliant actor for sure) to play Turing. Maybe there needed to be a tinge of softness to Turing's countenance, which Cumberbatch totally didn't have (again, probably because the film was too absorbed in bringing out to awards-nite perfection the all-too-cliché aspects of a misunderstood genius, a la the rough edges and the awkwardness, the serendipity etc etc that they forgot the human side).
