Review of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) by Jason V — 27 Jun 2012
Looking absolutely exquisite and displaying as much production design imagination as the story wants to include in the plot, Heath Ledger's final film steadfastly refuses to pander to what the audience may want to see (the imaginarium sequences) and instead focuses mostly on the people on the outside.
How do they scrape by? What's their story? How do they interact with one another? And a diabolical game of chicken they play with the Devil. The cast are all up to the challenge, buying completely into the story without a moments hesitation.
A romantic infatuation is a bit dull, to be honest, and the game of chicken tends to have ambiguous rules we're never really sure of. And, it should be mentioned, the story never manages to delve into anything meaningful about the imagination.
But with strong performances, an exactingly detailed look and just enough heart, this is a quirky recommendation.
