Review of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) by Dann M — 09 Jul 2013
Infamous as Heath Ledger's last film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a bizarre, surrealist fantasy from director Terry Gilliam. The story follows a traveling carnival performer named Dr. Parnassus who's able to collect souls by transcending a person's imagination, but when the Devil comes for Parnassus's daughter he turns to a mysterious stranger for help.
Co-starring Christopher Plummer, Andrew Garfield, and Lily Cole, and cast is pretty strong. And, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell step in to complete Ledger's role; which adds an interesting dimension to the film.
However, as impressive as the artistic designs and costumes are (and they are impressive), they can't compensate for the poor storytelling and weak characters development. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a fascinating visual spectacle, but that's about all that the film has going for it.
