Review of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) by Chris G — 21 Sep 2013
As good as any 'classic' Terry Gilliam film. Something about the film seems very 'real' despite the fantastic nature of it. 21st century London looks amazing, brand new and old all at the same time.
Excellent and non-obvious cast, Lily Cole particularly surprising and Tom Waits probably one of the best depictions of the devil (although he does seem a bit nice!) Lots of CGI but done in such a way as to remind you more of the Monty Python paper animations rather than anything else.
The various versions of Heath Ledger's character are a slight annoyance, but given the circumstances this can obviously be forgiven. Overall the story seems to hint at much larger mythology without you feeling the need to know more.
Very good and not half as whimsical as I expected.
