Review of The Illusionist (2010) by Paul J — 20 Feb 2011
Tati would have been proud. It's a nostalgic and melancholic look at the end of an era. Setting the film in '59 perfectly sets up this bittersweet transitional period. The tender coming-of-age story is elegantly and beautifully told.
The animation is utterly stunning - each portrait is worthy of freezing and hanging on a wall. It's sheer poetry from beginning to end, with great comedic touches and incredibly dark undertones. It's easily one of the finest films of the year: magical to say the least.
