Review of The Illusionist (2006) by Jasonl. — 16 Jan 2007
I liked this movie, but I didn't feel Norton's performance was up to par. The whole thing seemed a bit stiff. I guessed the ending, like most people will, as soon as the mystery became apparent.
It seems to me the whole movie was made and risked over that one plot device, which is not enough really to carry it. Smart as it may be, it has been ripped straight out of the usual suspects. I still enjoyed it and I think most people will.
Kind of reminds me of the Saw franchise in a way. One clever idea a movie does not make, especially when it comes across as being contrived and artificial. Norton's passionless performance was also a bit of a let down.
