Review of The Illusionist (2006) by Louise S — 16 Oct 2011
This movie starts off with Eisenheim getting arrested, so for about the first hour of the movie it's a long flashback leading back to the arrest. The basic premise of the movie is that it's a love story, one that is far from new.
What is new is making the lovelorn character a magician. Edward Norton doesn't speak as much as one would think however you can note quite a bit of seriousness from him while playing the character.
Jessica Biel's character is seen for the first half then sparingly in the second half (there is a good reason for this). And Rufus Sewell plays the jealous Prince Leopold. Well I won't really bore you with a long synopsis of the movie.
Like I said it's a love story, tragic in ways as we are accustomed too. So I believe that the first half was quite good, it's the second half that it tends to drag on and ends quite predictably.
While I didn't necessarily guess how it was going to end, it bordered on obvious when the reveal happened. So it's not a bad movie by any means, just the second half could turn some people off.
