The dialogue and character development could have been better, but the intricate plot and the show-stealing performance by Paul Giamatti more than make up for it. A mystery film wrapped in a romantic film wrapped in a dramatic film, The Illusionist manages to balance all three well enough to be a *very* enjoyable film.
