Review of The Illusionist (2006) by Jerome K — 11 Nov 2011
It's been awhile since I've been this entertained by a low-budget movie. A good magician, like any performer, is able to engage and captivate his audience, and I thought this film did just that.
Obviously, part of the fun of magic is not knowing how a trick is done, so the less you know about this movie, the better. Some critics have described the story as Oscar-worthy, but I think it's a little shy of that.
The performances range from stellar (Paul Giamatti) to pretty good (Edward Norton) to adequate (Jessica Biel). I thought the director did an excellent job of capturing the right atmosphere for this film set in early twentieth century Vienna, giving it an almost dreamlike quality.
These are the kind of movies that are missing from the industry lately. Make sure to find the time catch this movie. Once you do, just sit back and enjoy the show.
