Review of The Illusionist (2006) by Karalee B — 11 Jan 2012
I must admit, if I'm to study a film that tells a story about magicians, these 2 are great examples. Hands down, both released in 2006, The Prestige and The Illusionist, are 2 of the best films of that year, and also the best film I've ever seen about the world of magic and the illusion that the film's trying to figure out. Directors Nolan and Burger, impressed me a lot on their superb artistry to tell a simple yet a mind-blowing story about magicians who are somehow trapped as well in the illusion that they're performing. Jackman, Bale, and Norton, all are exceptional here, we feel such sympathy for their characters, they all want to be that great *illusionist*, but as you know, there are some obstacles. The women played by Johanson, Hall, and Bielefeld are very provocative and yet to be shapen by the male lead character. Don't get me wrong here, I must really shocked by each films twist at the end, that I will never forget in my whole life. What I also loved from these 2 movies is how they sometimes tells us about the risks of performing such easy or maybe deadly magic trick. Yes, I loved magic shows, but these 2 films are more than just what we typically see on TV like Cris Angel and David Blaine.
So what now? I loved Prestige and Illusionist, they defy standard and straight-forward storytelling with an execution that is surely with a payoff. And now I'm gonna stop reviewing this movie and you may be as well, tricked by my heavy words here to make you watched any of these films right now?
