Review of The Illusionist (2006) by Wes M — 03 Jun 2012
"Perhaps there is truth in this illusion." Solid. And anyone that compares this to The Prestige is foolish. I mean, yea, they are both about magicians, set in earlier times, and both were released in 2006, but that's as close as the movies get to each other.
Plot-wise, they couldn't be more different. I liked The Prestige more, but that's cuz Prestige is a Nolan, has a darker tone, and focuses more on magic, and this focused more on the romantic angle.
Don't get me wrong, there's definitely tricks to this one too, clever ones at that. And even though Ed Norton is the star and does a decent job, I enjoyed Paul Giamatti much more, and he was just the bra (ha, get it?).
And this movie is also proof that Jessica Biel can actually act, and she's not just another pretty face. Sadly, the movie is probably Neil Burger's best, he made Limitless and a few others that no one's heard of or seen.
However, he may be on the rise: he's doin the remake of Bride Of Frankenstein, and the adaptation of Uncharted. I have always wished and hoped that a video game movie will come out that doesn't suck.
Time will tell.
