Review of The Illusionist (2006) by R J — 24 Jan 2011
I think I'd give it an "E" for Effort... but I wouldn't even grade it for anything else. Paul Giamatti is great (and has a great voice, which I've never noticed before) but even he can't save this movie from the underacting of Edward Nortin, the overacting of Rufus Sewell, and the can-you-even-call-that-acting-? from Jessica Biel.
A confused collection of accents makes me wonder how continuity people stay employed. Regardless of those flaws, something else is missing here that could have made this a great movie, I just can't put my finger on what it was.
Maybe it's that none of the tricks were really revealed in the end?
