Review of The Ides of March (2011) by Bob S — 23 May 2012
This film follows the backroom positioning during a Democratic primary campaign. The number of premier actors is impressive and Gosling, Clooney, P.S. Hoffman and Giamatti do not fail to disappoint. The story has a few unexpected turns and more captivating subplots than predecessors such as Primary Colors and Bulworth.
However, I found it difficult to read the main character, Stephen (played by Gosling), and his motivations and ambitions. Specifically, his actions at the end of the movie took me off guard. The film highlights the dog-eat-dog world of politics, the tireless efforts required during a campaign, and the lengths opponents will go to swing the polls a few points.
Clooney directed this film and has proven again to have talent on the other side of the camera too.
