Review of The Ides of March (2011) by Andrew B — 09 Dec 2015
With all the makings of a great political suspense movie The Ides of March fall short because of the pure simple fact that Ryan Gosling is just not lead actor material. I have given him a fair shot, seeing all of his most heralded roles and films and in my eyes (my personal opinion) the guy just lacks what a great leading actor should have.
Clooney and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are stellar as they always are, along with the rest of the character cast of this film. The plot is solid and interesting. But once again Gosling shows absolutely no emotion in his acting.
Just the same calm demeanor that I've come to associate every part he plays with. I don't think I have ever seen his facial expression change, in any movie. Stop casting a good looking face for the sake of it, and cast someone who can get the job done and deliver a good performance.
The movie could have been great, but it falls flat.
