Review of The Ides of March (2011) by Ava R — 08 Jun 2012
The Ides of March is one of the best films of 2011 and is just another example that George Clooney is a incredible Actor/Director. The story follows Stephen Meyers (Ryan Gosling) who is the press secretary for political canidate Governor Mike Morris, but when Meyers discovers a deep secret inside the past of Governor Mike morris that could threaten his campaign, and the deep dark corruptness of politics may be enough to have Meyers not keep his lips shut forever.
The plot of the film is what I would consider, a work of genius because it not only shows how corrupt a political campaign is, it also shows how a person (espically a politician) may not be able to keep his promises once he is given the chance to do so, and the characters we are given are ones we grow to not love, but understand very well and we are not supposed to love them, because they are all just self centered people who care about one thing and one thing only, the campaign and their jobs.
The cast is an incredible group of actors who I consider to be one of the best cast of this year. Ryan Gosling is growing to be one of my favorite actors, after his amazing and beautiful performances this year from this and Drive he is showing he is one of the rising actors and I will believe will be an A lister in a few years, a prediction I have also made with Armie Hammer from films such as "The Social Network" and "J.
Edgar". George Clooney plays a good role and plays it serious and well, espically since his incredible directing is what is keep this film going, but either way you look at it he was great in this movie, although I did found Clooneys role to be a little too small and he did not get enough time on screen as I think the audience needed to understand the character better.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman has always been incredible, but I did not realize how great until I saw one of the greatest biographic films ever made called "Capote", and after this year with Moneyball and The Ides of March, I realize that his career is not going to die anytime soon.
Paul Giamatti is one of my favorite actors as well, he does not have a huge role but with the time he did have I enjoyed him and his character. The point of the films is to show us how the political campaigns are much more serious then they look, and it also shows how far a man will go to have his revenge and success, and how it can even take over everything we believe in.
The Ides of March is not at all what I was expecting, it was even better, and I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to watch and incredible political drama that if you know anything about politics, yu are sure to be able to connect to this very dark political thriller.
