Review of The Iceman (2012) by Turner E — 06 Sep 2014
Sorry everyone, I've been mostly bust these last few months, but I'm back to slowly review some of the movies I forgot to cover. One of which being this film, The Ice Man. I'll keep this review short mostly because, despite the subject, there really isn't that much to talk about.
Set in the 1970s, Michael Shannon plays Richard Kulkinski, a serial killer and mob hitman who murdered and butchered many people in New Jersey. The film focuses on his struggles between caring for his wonderful family and dealing with the mafia and their brutal demands.
Michael Shannon is able to find the right balance between menacing and caring that not a lot of other actors can carry. His casting for Zod in Man of Steel was one of the few highlights of that mediocre film. Its a shame that despite the subject matter, the rest of the film doesn't hold the same weight. The script is decent but it never feels particularly fresh or interesting when it doesn't focus on the mob hits. The direction is decent but not Scorsese worthy. And the pacing and editing is off. Years and moments go by but we rarely feel the transitions or changes. It just goes by without much impact.
Its a shame because the subject really is quite interesting. And nothing about this movie is bad per se, it just doesn't live up to its potential.
*** (out of 5).
