Review of The Iceman (2012) by Branham N — 16 Sep 2013
BASED ON A TRUE STORY. I just find incredible how a hit man was able to conceal his shady dealings from his family for nearly 17 years!! Strange that his wife never suspected a thing. The film covers a few decades from the 60's to the 80's so kudos to the costume and set designers.
A hit man named Richard Kuklinski (Michael Shannon) marries the woman of his dreams, a prim and proper lady named Deborah Pellicotti (Winona Ryder). Shortly thereafter they raise a family with two daughters.
During almost 17 years the wife and daughters had no idea that their husband/father was a hit man involved in the deaths of more than 100 men. Kuklinski had a code he always followed: never kill women or children and as I watched the film he was a good provider for his family, lying to them about his job and killing men for Roy Demeo (Ray Liotta) a member of the mob.
David Schwimmer plays the role of Josh Rosenthal, one of Demeo's hired hands. I never felt sorry for Kuklinski, he was merely a poor guy without an education who chose the easy and dangerous way to become rich thinking he could make it work.
Living lie after lie until the ugly truth finally caught up with him. A good crime thriller that covers the decades nicely, and makes you wonder when is the hammer coming down; and when it does, believe me its fast and furious.
Kuklinski receives the worst punishment imaginable, never seeing his family again for the rest of his life in prison. Recommended!
