I just generally find Michael Shannon pretty intimidating, he could make ordering a coffee slightly threatening so playing a mobster makes him particularly scary. This has been done though, many times - there are just so many gangster true crime stories out there.
It was boring because it was so familiar - but - if you like this sort of thing, this is a high quality film with a great cast and strong story.
