Review of The Ice Storm (1997) by Jack F — 22 Apr 2008
A great comparison paper could be made with this austere, quiet film and another title from the same year dealing with tragedy in cold weather, Atom Egoyan's The Sweet Hereafter. Both films share a knowledge of human behavior and emotion that makes their difficult stories engrossing and fascinating when otherwise the audience would want to turn away.
Ang Lee's film is less harrowing than Egoyan's but it is nonetheless incisive and thought-provoking. When you add on the star-studded cast, an alternately humorous and heartbreaking story and the subtle yet shattering climax, you've got one of the best movies of 1997.
