In the genre of films-about-intertwined-dysfunctional-families-with-tragic-endings, I've always felt that American Beauty was given a great deal of the acclaim that should have gone to--or at least been shared with--The Ice Storm, which preceded it by a couple of years and seemed to have been comparatively overlooked.
