Review of The Ice Storm (1997) by Peter B — 04 Mar 2011
Its funny how hollywood works. Sumfin does well so they just try and repackage it. Even with oscary films. In this case : American beauty did good box office and won awards so along came a slew of "families all have secrets and never talk to each other" style dramas. Its like currently coz the wrestler won awards we get "comeback" style films like "crazy heart" and "the fighter". Its just weird once ya notice it. So what my point is - is that this suffers from bein "american beauty" lite. I love american beauty, the more I watch it the more Spaceys performance and a dark yet funny vibe draw me in. It feels more and more like a real original. This however is humourless, uneventful eastenders style soap opera-ness but set in the past. Honestly - Nothin happens!!!! Everyone looks stoned but not in a fun way. Everyone looks like you woke them up at 3.34 in the mornin and gathered them together to chat about life. Then coz theyre tired an otherwise interestin discussion about life ends up bein a bunch of sleepy folks sittin round lookin fed up and like they wanna be sumwhere else.
Constantly referring to the fantastic four gets annoyin, like its tryin to be all arty but at the same time sayin "hey we read comics too, were cool".
Well this aint cool. Its a square maaan. With a flippin amazing cast like this it saddens me to say its soooo dull. Kevin kline is as good as ever though. Dont call him stooopid!!
