Review of The Ice Pirates (1984) by Tyler R — 16 Oct 2008
Let's be honest: it's NOT the movie meant to be taken seriously, especially in the 21st Century. In fact, I don't think it was supposed to be taken seriously back in 1984 when it was made, before I was born.
The film kind of spoofs "Star Wars." I think. But honestly, it looks closer to a spoof of "Star Trek" in the way the crew behaves and interacts together (based on a viewing with a Trekker). The computers look like something that, as my brother described, look like something stolen from a Soviet missile silo in the 1960s with a television screen that plays roller derby.
The budget must have been a bit uneven for this film-I definitely saw the cast climb an extension ladder in one scene instead of having a ladder built in the set. Ed Wood would have been proud. The robots were probably where the money went. Not to say they were any GOOD, mind you.
The one clever bit was the aging gag as the ship went through hyperspace for FAR too long. Seeing everyone get REALLY old REALLY fast was pretty funny.
Rent this movie when the movie rental place calls you with the random free rental. And then go MST3K on this beast.
