Review of The Hustler (1961) by Kevin S — 13 Oct 2008
Along with Cool Hand Luke, this is my favorite Paul Newman movie. Dark, brooding, and shot in beautiful black & white, Rossen's movie depicts "Fast" Eddie Felson's descent into hell through way of pool halls and greedy opportunists (George C.
Scott). Piper Laurie is also great as the tragicly flawed love interest who cannot save Eddie from himself. Scorsese's follow-up, The Color of Money is also good, but not nearly as good as The Hustler.
