Review of The Hustler (1961) by Alex M — 21 Oct 2008
This was a great movie. Paul Newman did a terrific job in this. The B&W didn't distract me at all. The acting and camerawork was so good, I couldn't look away. The whole relationship between him and Piper Laurie's Sarah, was just tragic and the way it ends is sad.
I really liked Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats in this, he seemed so calm and cool in this, and George C. Scott played a sick manager. From the very moment I saw his character, I knew he was gonna be a good part of the movie.
Of course pool looks much easier than you think, but this movie proves how tough it is. In the days when it was a big sport, now it just seems like a casual game between gentlemen, but this is where it all started.
lol Robert Rossen's directing was terrific in this, everything flowed nicely, the editing was nice and neat, acting top notch and camera work added to the heat of the story. give it a shot. its one of those "old classic blah" films but seriously give it a watch if you appreciate paul newman or acting or just the game of pool.
now onto "Color of Money".
