Review of The Hustler (1961) by Sumit B — 22 Jul 2010
A film primarily about character...and containing fascinating individuals who hold the screen throughout. Their relationships are complex and intriguing, with compelling interplay.
The dialogue is superb, in a way you don't see as much in modern films. The picnic scene being one of numerous examples.
The actress in this is perfect, in that old fashioned, tragically beautiful way, though I haven't seen her in anything else. George Scott is an absolute monster. And let's all take a moment to remind ourselves that Paul Newman was the coolest actor of his, or anyone else's generation.
As brilliant as films get.
