Review of The Hustler (1961) by André D — 29 Mar 2013
Robert Rossen's remarkably lensed, tightly edited tale of one hustler's quest for redemption came about at a crucial point in time: at the end of Hollywood's Golden Age, arriving with a new age of cinema that dealt with what it meant to be a human being.
In "The Hustler," Paul Newman gives probably his best, most career-defining performance as 'Fast' Eddie Felson while George C. Scott is reptilian as the suave, cold-blooded Bert Gordon.
"The Hustler" is best remembered for its jazz score, stylish editing, influential black-and-white cinematography and morally complex characters.
