Review of The Hustler (1961) by Keir B — 09 Mar 2009
Everything I want from a film. Understated and equivocal. It seems truly timeless, with characters that ring hauntingly true. It isn't a sports movie, but the few pool games are among the most gripping scenes in film history.
The black and white cinematography is subtle and expressive. The performances are perfectly nuanced and devastating (Newman's and Laurie's in particular) and the script is the definition of class with it's endlessly quotable dialogue.
Flawless.
