Review of The Hurricane (1999) by Brad G — 24 Feb 2009
This is an interesting one to rate. It gets high marks because of an amazing performance from Denzel that truly merited his Oscar win. He's one of the most enjoyable actors to watch anyway, but this ranks right up there with Malcolm X as his best.
A few of the scenes, especially the conversation in prison with his wife where he seemed to give up hope, were flat out stirring and had me more emotional than I would have expected. But the acting is that good.
Sadly the same can't be said of the supporting cast. The kid who becomes his pen pal got better as the film went along, but his acting simply wasn't naturalistic. Dan Hedaya turned in a performance that was WAY over the top and borderline ridiculous.
I wanted to hate the guy, but the mindless evil just wasn't even believable--it would have been more apt for a Van Damme villain. So while the directing and supporting cast are nothing special, Denzel carried this movie the way Michael Jordan carried the Bulls.
